The return is an estimate based on historical averages, not a promise — the stock market fluctuates and individual years can see significant losses. The calculation assumes returns are compounded monthly and deposits are made at the end of each month. Taxes and fund fees are not included (taxes are explained below). This is not investment advice or tax advice.

What is compound interest

Compound interest means returns are reinvested, so next year the earlier returns earn too. Growth seems slow at first but accelerates over time: investing €100 a month at 8% a year, over 30 years you deposit 36 000 € and end up with 140 855 €.

Time matters more than the amount: €100 a month for 40 years (322 108 €) gives more than €200 a month for 20 years (113 800 €), even though the deposits are the same.

Investment account

In an investment account (offered by banks and brokers) you can buy and sell shares and funds without paying tax on each transaction. Income tax of 25.5% is paid only when the money withdrawn exceeds your total deposits. This lets you rebalance without tax along the way.

Example: €100 a month for 30 years at 8% a year — final amount 140 855 €, of which 104 855 € is gain. Withdrawing everything, income tax is 26 738 € and 114 117 € remains after tax.

What to keep in mind

The calculator shows the amount before tax. The examples here are simplified and meant for rough comparison — they do not include fund management fees, foreign dividend withholding, offsetting losses between transactions or transitional rules. Second- and third-pillar pensions have different rules. Before deciding, check the current rules on the VID website or consult a specialist.
